Water Quality

Why Our Lake Water Quality Sets Us Apart in Bristol

West Country Water Park sits on a hilltop lake fed entirely by rain and a 60-metre-deep borehole – no farm runoff, no road drainage, no river contamination. As a result, our water is naturally soft, crisp and refreshingly clean before we even begin our testing programme. Since we test every month, you can book any activity with total confidence.

Whether you’re swimming laps, launching a paddleboard or flying across the Aqua Park, you deserve to know the water is safe. That’s why we test ours every single month.

How We Test and Monitor Our Outdoor Lake Water in Bristol

Specifically, here’s exactly how our monthly water quality programme works, from sampling to publishing results:

  • Monthly sampling – water is collected from five points across the lake (north, east, south, west and centre) using sterile bottles supplied by Mercian Science
  • Independent lab analysis – Mercian Science analyses every sample for E. coli, Intestinal Enterococci and other coliforms
  • Immediate action policy – if results ever show unacceptable levels, we close the lake immediately and cancel all water activities until it is safe again (this has never happened)
  • Ongoing circulation and oxygenation – furthermore, the water is continuously oxygenated and recirculated to prevent bacterial build-up between tests
  • Natural balance – wildlife, fish and aquatic plants all contribute to a self-regulating ecosystem that supports excellent water quality year-round

How We Keep Our North Bristol Lake Clean & Safe

Borehole & Rainwater Supply

  • The lake is 100% fed by rainfall and a 60-metre-deep borehole – no rivers, streams or agricultural runoff
  • The borehole draws fresh, clean water from deep underground and is independently tested regularly
  • Being at the top of a hill, the lake has no inflow from farms, roads or drainage channels
  • Approximately 30 million litres of water are recirculated annually, keeping the ecosystem balanced

Wildlife, Weeds & Natural Balance

  • Birds, fish, newts and other wildlife live on and around the lake – fish naturally consume waste and midges, supporting water balance
  • The water is continuously oxygenated and circulated to prevent coliforms from forming
  • Aquatic weeds are harmless and controlled by regular raking with our dedicated lake management boat
  • The distinctive green colour comes from fine colloidal clay in suspension – not algae or contamination
  • After busy activity days, the clay bottom may be stirred up – this is natural and not a sign of poor water quality

Book Any Activity with Confidence

  • Our water quality monitoring is included as standard with every activity booking – no extra charge

What You Can and Cannot Do with the Lake Water

Our lake is regularly tested and safe for all water activities. Specifically, here’s what our water quality means in practice for your visit. For more answers, see our FAQs:

  • Safe to swim, paddleboard, waterski, use the Aqua Park and more – accidentally swallowing small amounts of water during activity is not harmful at our tested quality levels
  • Do not drink the lake water directly – it is not filtered to drinking-water standards, though it will not cause harm in trace amounts
  • If results ever returned unacceptable coliform levels, we would close the lake immediately and notify all customers – this has never happened

We swim in our own lake every day. In short, we trust our water completely – and we want you to as well.
