Become a Qualified Open Water Lifeguard
Our lifeguard training Bristol programme leads to the RLSS Open Water Lifeguard (OWL) – the nationally recognised qualification for supervising and providing rescue cover at planned open water activities. Furthermore, you’ll train on our natural lake near Winterbourne, North Bristol – a genuine real-world environment where you’ll develop practical rescue skills, casualty management, and the risk-assessment confidence the OWL demands. In particular, our RLSS-qualified instructors guide you every step of the way.

Lake Training Environment

Your Training Day, Step by Step
- Arrive and Check In – On the day, meet your RLSS-qualified instructor at the lake.
- Course Briefing – Specifically, a full briefing covering theory, rescue planning, and risk assessment before entering the water.
- Practical Water Skills – Complete hands-on rescue training in the open water environment of our natural lake.
- Casualty Management – Practise first aid and casualty management techniques on land and at the water’s edge.
- OWL Assessment – Complete both the practical and theoretical elements of the RLSS assessment.
- Certification – Additionally, receive your results and OWL certification details on successful completion.
What to Bring and What We Provide
Bring
- Swimwear and wetsuit (or hire on-site)
- Towel and warm layers for after training
- Your booking confirmation
We Provide
- RLSS-qualified instructor for the full course
- Natural lake training environment
- Rescue equipment
- On-site changing rooms, hot showers, and toilets
- Café on-site for refreshments


Entry Requirements
- Be 16 years or older at the time of assessment
- Be competent and confident in open water
- Be able to submerge under water confidently
- Swim at least 400 metres continuously in a pool or open water, on your front and showing urgency

You agree to follow all staff instructions, behave responsibly, and not participate if pregnant or under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You also confirm that you and any children you sign for are competent swimmers, and that any medical conditions will be disclosed to our team on arrival.
